Liberal candidate for Niddrie, Rebecca Gauci Maurici, has announced that a re-elected Napthine Government will contribute $135,000 towards works at Avondale Heights Sports Club as part of their master plan. The contribution supports Stage 2 of the Club’s Master Plan, with Stage 1 having been completed in 2011.

Ms Gauci Maurici congratulated the club and its volunteers on their hard work and the planning they have undertaken to ensure the club can support future growth. “Avondale Heights has always been an active community sporting club and this announcement supports the Napthine Government’s commitment to vibrant engaged and active communities.

“This commitment recognises the hard work the club have been doing and enables them to continue encouraging families in the community to be involved in sport.”

Avondale Heights Sports Club Facilities coordinator, Ray Micallef, said the Stage 2 project would increase the capacity in the main club rooms, upgrade the club kitchen and canteen amenities, provide a security storage area and provide an external covered area and bring the facility in line with the proposed City of Moonee Valley – Sports Development Plan which sets the standard for Sports Pavilions. “Rebecca has taken an active interest in the Avondale Heights Sports Club, and we are grateful for her support and lobbying on this project. Our club is diverse and inclusive and prides itself on community participation - so the support of the Napthine Government enables us to continue playing an important role in our community,” Mr Micallef said.

Member for Western Metropolitan Region, Andrew Elsbury, joined Ms Gauci Maurici to make the announcement. “We’re proud to support the Avondale Heights Sports Club develop so that even more members of the community can enjoy the benefits of getting more active more often and build a better Victoria,” Mr Elsbury said. “I would call on Moonee Valley City Council to see the valuable contribution that the club makes to the social fabric of our area and commit to cofounding this stage of the master plan,” Mr Elsbury said.

Rebecca said that the Coalition Government is committed to providing sporting infrastructure that meets the needs of the community and allows people of all ages to participate in sport and physical activity. The Avondale Heights Sporting Club have also committed $20,000 to the project which is funds that have been raised from conducting the Tea Gardens Gift athletics event each February.
